What is periodontal disease?

February 3, 2016

Also known as gum disease, periodontal disease refers to a chronic inflammatory condition affecting the tissues supporting teeth. These tissues include gums, the jawbone and the connective tissue attaching teeth to the jawbone. Although there are different forms of periodontal disease, the most common forms are known as gingivitis and periodontitis. Whereas gingivitis is typically treatable, periodontitis can result in significant loss of bone around teeth. Early diagnosis is key to successful treatment.
